ULCS is a proposed map of a growing scientific intersection.
Unified Living Computation Science, or ULCS, is an author-proposed classification and governance framework for organizing research about computation in living, synthetic, and hybrid systems.
In ordinary language, ULCS asks a broad organizing question: how should science describe systems in which information is not merely stored, but sensed, interpreted, executed, regulated, inherited, adapted, or physically embodied?
Cells regulate gene expression. Nervous systems integrate signals. Organisms adapt to changing environments. Synthetic biology rewrites biological programs. Biohybrid devices combine living components with engineered materials. ULCS does not claim that these are new discoveries. It proposes a shared structure for comparing and classifying work that already spans many fields—and for describing carefully bounded areas that may emerge in the future.
02 / The organizing problem
Related research is distributed across different scientific languages.
Biology, computer science, physics, neuroscience, synthetic biology, bioengineering, materials science, and information theory often examine different parts of the same larger systems. Each field has valid methods and terminology, but their boundaries can make comparison difficult when living processes, information, physical substrates, and engineered components are studied together.
ULCS addresses that coordination problem. It supplies stable category names, stated boundaries, explicit relationships, and a versioned record. Its purpose is not to collapse distinct sciences into one field. It is to give researchers a consistent lens for locating interdisciplinary work without erasing the disciplines that make the work possible.
ULCS is best understood as an organizational layer: a map for comparing domains, not a replacement for the territory mapped by established sciences.
03 / The architecture
Why does ULCS use eight canonical domains?
The eight-domain structure separates questions that operate at different levels. Some concern intrinsic computation in living systems; others concern biological code, engineered organ systems, physical substrates, quantum-adjacent hypotheses, or the physical constraints that shape adaptation and evolution. Keeping these categories distinct reduces the risk of treating every form of biological information processing as though it were the same phenomenon.
The structure is hierarchical only where ULCS explicitly says so: ULCS is the parent framework, LCS is a core domain within it, and LCFS is a foundational subdomain of LCS. The other five categories operate laterally under the parent framework rather than being forced into that same nested chain.
Some categories describe active neighboring research areas; others are prospective or exploratory ULCS classifications. Their inclusion in the taxonomy does not establish that every proposed mechanism exists or has been experimentally validated.
04 / Scientific relationships
How does ULCS relate to biology, computation, physics, and engineering?
Biology
Supplies the living systems, mechanisms, experiments, and empirical evidence. ULCS helps classify computational interpretations of those systems.
Computer science
Supplies formal ideas about information, algorithms, computation, architecture, and complexity that may support careful comparison.
Physics
Supplies constraints involving matter, energy, thermodynamics, measurement, and the physical realizability of proposed mechanisms.
Engineering
Supplies methods for designing and testing synthetic, biohybrid, material, and organ-level systems under explicit performance and safety requirements.
ULCS therefore depends on established fields. Evidence still comes from experiments, observations, formal analysis, and peer-reviewed research within the relevant disciplines. The framework can organize claims, but classification alone cannot prove them.

ULCS is not
- An institutionally recognized scientific discipline
- A claim of ownership over life, natural laws, or existing research
- An experimental result or proof of a mechanism
- A medical, engineering, or regulatory standard
- An autonomous AI, software platform, or technological system
These limits are important because ULCS includes topics that can sound ambitious. The framework distinguishes an organized category from a validated scientific claim. It also distinguishes internal canonical authority—authority over ULCS wording and records—from external scientific or institutional authority.
06 / Governance
Why use canonical records and numbered versions?
A framework loses usefulness if its terms change silently. ULCS therefore treats its definitions, boundaries, and relationships as a versioned canonical record. Version 1.2 remains a stable historical edition. A future revision may add or clarify material, but it should be identified as a later numbered version rather than retroactively changing what Version 1.2 meant.
“Canonical” here has a limited meaning: the author-maintained official record of the ULCS framework. It does not mean that universities, scientific societies, governments, standards bodies, or researchers are required to adopt the classification.
